The examination will also include gender issues in the Renaissance period and an insight into all kinds of gender violence in Othello, foregrounding the violence suffered by Desdemona and the relationship between her and Othello, as they are the main characters of the play. However, the analysis would be too simplistic if we just considered that Othello and Desdemona´s actions responded to Renaissance parameters. So, some character analysis will prove necessary to try to find an explanation to Othello´s violence, if this is at all possible.

Julia Fernández Armendáriz graduated from IES en Lenguas Vivas “Juan R. These are the “inlaw” and the “outlaw” female principles. Shakespeare’s plays have provoked a profound debate because of how the societies portrayed in them allow or sanction the transgressions of their female characters to these principles. Analysing the heroine’s behaviour in As You Like It we can discuss the question of sexism in Shakespeare to see how subversion of gender roles evidences social mandates as well as allows for dramatic progression. At school we have been working with both texts for several years now with considerable success. Teaching unabridged Shakespearean plays to ESL students in a bilingual school may appear as a big challenge but it also stands as a great opportunity to teach language through literature. Over the last few years students have come up with a wide range of “products”, from 5-minute performances of the trial scene in The Merchant to printed cartoon versions of the murder scene in Macbeth. Every year we also hold a soliloquy contest in which students from the last two years of middle school deliver speeches from the plays they are studying and are assessed by a board of teachers against strict criteria.

Patricia Buffa de Cernadas is a Language and literature teacher and team leader at St Catherine’s Moorlands School, Tortuguitas, IBO Middle Years Program Personal Project moderator and material design contributor and has been teaching Shakespeare to teenagers for the last 20 years.
